"The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV).
For years, my husband and I owned female black labs. After we lost our last one to cancer, we visited a local animal shelter to search for our next loyal companion. I wandered off to explore on my own and was drawn to one particular kennel. The steady gaze of a beautiful cattle dog mix caught my attention. She wasn’t barking or jumping like her companions but sat quietly and followed my every move. Something about her soulful eyes tugged at my heart. I called for my husband to look at her, but he seemed disappointed she wasn’t a labrador. After a little coaxing, he agreed we should take her for a walk. I sat on the grass watching as the canine obediently followed every command. After completing their short walk, the little beauty trotted to me and sat quietly by my side. As I stroked her back, I whispered, “Would you like to come home with me?” If a dog could hug, she hugged me. With both paws on my shoulders, a small moan escaped her chest. I knew she was the one. Within a few weeks of bringing Bella home, I knew God had gifted me with exactly what I needed. She’s the calmest, most even-tempered canine I have ever encountered. For seven years now, Bella has been my constant companion — she’s not my shadow; she’s my Velcro dog. No matter where I go, she’s by my side. God has used Bella as his means of reminding me of his constant love and presence. From emotional struggles to numerous health crises, the one constant in my life has been my Velcro dog. God has used this rescue dog to rescue me. "I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me" (Psalm 13:5 NLT).
